DICKENS, Charles. Autograph quotation signed from Dombey and Son, Devonshire Terrace, 10 February 1848, 'Very often afterwards, in the midst of their talk, he would break off, to try to understand what it was that the waves were always saying; and would rise up on his couch to look towards that invisible region far away', one page, 8vo.
A quotation from the second chapter, entitled 'Mrs Pipchin's' in which Paul Dombey, a delicate child, is at Brighton with his sister, Florence, and is wheeled down on his bed to the sea. His father had entrusted him to Mrs Pipchin's 'infantile boarding house' for the improvement of his health at the age of five. The work was first published in 20 monthly instalments priced at one shilling, from October 1846 to April 1848.
