DICKENS'S FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT IN AMERICA came with the anonymous "Mrs Joseph Porter, 'Over the Way'", which appeared in the 29 March issue (p. 104). Two years later the story, along with five others in this volume, was incorporated into his first book, Sketches by Boz. The author's first appearance in print in England had been only four months earlier in The Monthly Magazine of December 1833 (see lot 97). The other sketches included in this rare journal are "A Dinner at Poplar Walk" (p. 106), "The Bloomsbury Christening" (p. 147), "The Boarding House" (p. 201), "The Boarding House - II" (p. 323) and "The Steam Excursion" (p. 361).
