AN INVITATION TO DICKENS'S READING OF THE CHIMES. Forster, the literary critic of the Examiner writes to William Johnson Fox of the Daily News: 'Dickens proposes to read us his little story. It is a tea party - D. objecting to anything more jovial - & we assemble punctually at 1/2 past 6. Tomorrow. Tuesday. Come, if you can. D is in town for 4 days only!!'. Forster entertained frequently at 58 Lincoln's Inn Fields (described in Bleak House as Mr Tulkinghorn's Chambers); those who attended the reading on 3 December were portrayed in Daniel Maclise's sketch of the occasion and included Carlyle, Stanfield, Blanchard, Jerrold, Fox, Harness, Frederick Dickens and Alexander Dyce.
