Together 18 Christmas numbers (245 x 165mm). 1860 with illustration. 1864 and 1865 with tipped-in advertisement slips for Our Mutual Friend, 1864 also with 2ll. advertisements on blue paper. (Title to 1851 slightly soiled, 1853 and 1855 with first leaf tipped in, some marginal tears and repairs particularly in 1854-56, 1855 with tear slightly affecting text on p. 2.) 1863-67 in original printed blue wrappers, others in modern wrappers. Morocco slipcase (split at top). Provenance: C.B. Goppey (signature on wrapper to 1864) -- Stephen M. Dryfoos -- Kenyon Starling -- William E. Self (his sale, Christie's New York, 2 April 2008, lot 118).
ORIGINAL ISSUES. These short tales included many of Dickens's "very best descriptive character-sketches" (Kitton), namely: "The Haunted House", "A Message from the Sea", "Tom Tiddler's Ground", "Somebody's Luggage", "Mrs Lirriper's Lodgings", "Doctor Marigold's Prescriptions", "Mugby Junction", and "No Thoroughfare" (with Wilkie Collins).
