BÖCKLER, Georg Andreas (1664-1698). Theatrum machinarum novum, translated from German by Heinrich Schmitz. Nuremberg: widow and heirs of Paul Fürst, 1686. 2° (352 x 219mm). Engraved additional title by V. Sommer, and 154 engraved plates, some signed by Balthasar Schwan or E. Kiefer, all after the author. (Text browned, some marginal spotting, particularly affecting engraved title and final plate, a few corners creased.) 18th-century panelled calf (repairs to spine, lower cover and corners, joints cracked, endpapers renewed). Provenance: 'J. Hewitt 1760. Bought of Whiston' (inscription on front blank) -- Francis Ferrand Foljambe (title stamp).
Böckler's display of mechanical art, a compilation from contemporary sources, depended on ingenious uses of the cog wheel in machinery varying from gigantic mills to the humble kitchen spit; for motion the intricate systems of wheels employed either water, wind, weights, horse power or human muscle. The original German edition was printed at Nuremberg in 1661, and there were two Latin editions in 1662, printed at Nuremberg and Cologne. The engraved title to this later edition, reading 'Theatrum machinarum novum. Exhibens opera molaria et aquatica constructum industria', retains Paul Fürst's 1662 imprint. Hoover 142.
