SENECA, Lucius Annaeus (?4 B.C.-65 A.D.). The Workes... Both Morrall and Naturall. Translated by Thomas Lodge. London: William Stansby, 1614. 2° (321 x 201mm). Engraved architectural title by W. Hole, printer's device on divisional titles (dated 1613) and at end, woodcut historiated and other initials, headpieces, tailpieces. (Without first and final blanks, a few tiny rust spots touching one or two letters, one neat marginal tear, o4.5 with small marginal adhesion). Contemporary calf, red morocco spine label, red speckled edges (small tears at head of spine, lightly scuffed.) Provenance: early inscription deleted -- A. Eyre (booklabel) -- Abel E. Berland (booklabel, sale, Christie's NY, 9 October 2001, lot 316).
FIRST EDITION of Thomas Lodge's respected translation of Seneca's philosophical works. Lodge (1558-1625), a playwright, poet and novelist, dedicated the latter part of his life to classical translations. While there had been earlier translations of two of Seneca's works--De Remediis Fortuitorum by Robert Whittington (London: W. Myddylton, 1547) and De Beneficiis by A. Golding (London: J. Day, 1578)--this was the first full translation of Seneca's philosophical writings and includes the Flemish humanist, Iustus Lipsius' Life of Seneca and his notes to The Epistles.
