FIRST EDITION of Thomas Lodge's respected translation of Seneca's philosophical works. Lodge (1558-1625), a playwright, poet and novelist, dedicated the latter part of his life to classical translations. While there had been earlier translations of two of Seneca's works--De Remediis Fortuitorum by Robert Whittington (London: W. Myddylton, 1547) and De Beneficiis by A. Golding (London: J. Day, 1578)--this was the first full translation of Seneca's philosophical writings and includes the Flemish humanist, Iustus Lipsius' Life of Seneca and his notes to The Epistles. Lodge's translation was reprinted, with numerous corrections, in 1620. STC 22213; Pforzheimer 625; Allison Thomas Lodge, 48.
