WALT WHITMAN -- BURROUGHS, John. Wake-Robin. New York: at the Riverside Press, Cambridge, for Hurd and Houghton, 1871. 8° (175 x 115mm). (A few leaves browned, old adhesive stain in one gutter.) Original pictorial cloth, upper side stamped in black and gilt, yellow coated endpapers (hinges and joints split, corners rubbed, front endpaper nearly detached). Laid in a red buckram case with a 2pp autograph letter signed, and envelope, from the author. Provenance: John Burroughs (gift inscription to:) -- Walt Whitman -- Lucy Hine (pencilled gift inscription from 'Mrs W. Whitman', dated Sept 1871) -- F.H. Cogswell (ALS from Burrouhs laid-in) -- Boston University (booklabel; deaccession letter provided).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO WALT WHITMAN: 'from his friend John Burroughs. Washington D.C. May 20th, 1871'; and with a 2-page autograph letter, signed, from Burroughs to a later owner confirming the provenance ('he rarely keeps a book long; his friends or callers carry them off, & that is the last of them'). Burroughs published the first biography of Whitman in 1867, which had been extensively revised by Whitman before publication. Wake-Robin is Burroughs's first collection of nature essays; a field in which he had been encouraged by Whitman.
