A RARE NORTH GERMAN EMBOSSED BLACK-AND-WHITE COMB MORION BEARING THE ARMS OF THE COOPERS' GUILD, BRUNSWICK OR COLOGNE

Formed of two halves joined by a narrow comb indented in imitation of ropework, the sides of the skull embossed with the arms of the Coopers' Guild, a hand-axe between the points of a set of dividers, within an embossed circular frame, studded with lining rivets on pewter rosette washers, narrow brim drawn up to sharp points, turned indented edges, and later armoured straps

Lot Essay

A comparable etched morion also bearing the arms of the Coopers' Guild, intended presumably for an officer of the guild, is preserved in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (28.195.1). See European Helmets, 1450-1650, Treasures from the Reserve Collection, No.51.
