BRESCIA 1590 -- FONTANA, Publio. Il sontuoso apparato fatto dalla magnifica citta di Brescia nel felice ritorno dell' Illu. & Reverendiss. Vescovo Suo Il Cardinale Morosini. Con la spositione de'sensi simbolici che in esso si contengono. Brescia: Vicenzo Sabbio, 1591.
2o (344 x 241 mm). Engraved title and 13 engraved plates (one double-page and five folding) five of which are by LEON PALLAVICINO (repaired tear near gutter of title). 17th-century Italian blind-panelled vellum over pasteboard. Provenance: some marginalia in an early hand.
A celebration of the return home of CARDINAL GIAN FRANCESCO MOROSINI (1537-1596), Archbishop of Brescia, in 1590. This is one of the most elaborately produced fête books for a non-Royal figure, and provides a great deal of information on 16th-century Italian architecture. The Serlian models by the Brescian architect GIULIO TODESCHINO are of great importance in the study of regional interpretations. The large arches through which the cardinal entered the city are shown in the plates, as is a bird's-eye plan showing the arrangement in pairs around a central grid. The inset paintings in the arches were executed by the Brescian artist TOMASO BUONA. Berlin 3189a; Cicognara 1399; Lipperheide Sl 2; Ruggieri 1885; Vinet 790.
