These 41 remarkable plates depict the funeral of the WILLIAM IV (1711-1751), Prince of Orange. The designer of the plates was the painter PIETER VAN CUYK from the Hague and the engraver was the Amsterdam artist JAN PUNT, also a renowned painter and engraver as well as a performing actor. Vinet gives a detailed description of the plates--official cortèges, infantry, cavalry, the household of the prince including the pastrymakers, the cooks, etc. Vinet calls the book "un bel ouvrage" and also "une oeuvre remarquable." The text is in Dutch and French and the legends underneath the plates in Dutch, French and English. The funeral took place in Delft and the last plate--often missing--shows the funeral procession in the Great Market in Delft, before the church, with all the buildings around the square.
