4o (245 x 174 mm). Three engraved plates (one folding) (cropped at bottom). (Repairs to gutter margins, A4 with repaired tear and lower margin renewed.) Modern calf.

This relates to the festival in Rome upon the election of FERDINAND III as Holy Roman Emperor on 1 February 1637. Three monuments used in the pyrotechnic displays are shown in the plates. The spectacle was held in the piazza in front of the palazzo Madama. On the first day, a large mountain served as the base for a Phoenix rising, symbolizing Ferdinand's rise as emperor; three days later the mountain served as the ground on which Hercules fought Idra, again an allegory relating to Ferdinand. In the final day, an allegory of Fame, Piety and Justice was performed, incorporating the Centaur. Maurizio Fagiolo dell'Arco, La festa barocca, Rome, 1997, pp.295-96.
