Lot Essay

For similar examples of the reference 6036 see 100 Superlative Rolex Watches by John Goldberger, p. 88.

The present watch is an outstanding example of reference 6036 with extremely crisp hallmarks between and underneath the lugs. The case back still retains the reference number which is still beautifully visible to the naked eye. Vintage complicated Rolex treasures are very rare and to find such a watch in pristine condition provides a wonderful opportunity for the esteemed collector to acquire one of the greatest Rolex triple calendar chronographs to be offered at auction in recent years.
One of the most coveted Rolex watches every produced, the Oyster Anti-Magnetic Triple Chronograph was introduced beginning in 1948 with the Reference 4767, followed by the 5036 and the 6036 in the early 1950s. The 6036 earned the nickname "The Jean-Claude Killy" after the first model was presented to the Olympic skiing champion. These early triple chronographs are known as some of the most complicated wristwatches ever produced by Rolex. The case's mono-bloc design- implying manufacture from a single bloc of metal- was maintained throughout the production of these three models until 1957, when the 6036 was discontinued.
