Bernard Gimbel (1885-1966) was an American retailing magnate who served as the president of the famed nation wide Gimbel Brothers Inc. from 1927 until 1953. Bernard's grandfather, Adam Gimbel, immigrated to the United States from Germany and founded the family retailing business in the mid-west. A 1907 graduate of the Wharton School, Bernard began work in his father's Philadelphia department store and later managed Gimbel's flagship department store in New York City. In 1923, Gimbel oversaw the purchase of Saks and Company whose store was located at 34th Street. After moving the Saks store to its current location on Fifth Avenue, Gimbel Brothers Inc. turned both Gimbels and Saks into successful national chains. Bernard was known to be both a competitive and cunning businessman as well as a fun-loving member of high society.
