A pewter Art Nouveau charity box
By Mogens Ballin, Copenhagen, 1901
Shaped as a stylised house, the front and back decorated in relief with a cone-form door with a stepped centre formed by movable lines, inscribed above in Danish in relief To the Society for the care of the sick, the sides engraved with a quotation in Hebrew from psalm 41 v.2 Ashrei Maskil el Dal and the translation in danish, the roof engraved with stylised bands resembling roof-tiles at the sides, fitted with a coin-slot above and turn-off lid at the bottom, signed on the lid with the initials of the artist's name MB (Mogens Ballin), Denmark 1901
This charity box was designed by Siegfried Wagner and made by Mogens Ballin in 1901 for the society for the care of the sick Tiferes Jedidim which was established at Copenhagen in 1821, with presumably no more than 100-200 members. These charity boxes were to replace the old ones and were made in a limited edition of possibly 30-60 pieces. About Siegfried Wagner (1874-1952), a well known Danish sculptor and Mogens Ballin (1871-1914), an important post-impressionist Danish painter, both Jewish artists, see Enc. Judaica, vol 3, cols 596 and 612.
