8o (149 x 89 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title-page and coat-of arms on verso of A2, head-piece and initials. (Some occasional spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum. Provenance: Giovanni Augustini Peri (contemporary signatures at foot of title-page and verso of rear free endpaper); Giovanni Casaretto (1812-1879), Italian botanist and traveller (penciled library mark on front pastedown).
FIRST EDITION from the distinguished library of Giovanni Casaretto, Italian botanist and author of Novarum stirpium brasiliensium decades (Genoa 1842), whose herbarium is at the Universities of Turin and Genoa. Anguissola was a collaborator of Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) and the Compendium provides the oldest scientific data for flora of Piacenza Province. Initially plants are listed alphabetically, giving synonyms and names in other languages (including Arabic) and a brief pharmacopia. This is followed by a similar dictionary of compound medicines, and lastly a treatise on the Unicorn and other one-horned animals such as the rhinoceros. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current no copy has sold at auction in the last 30 years.
