4o (240 x 179 mm). Woodcut vignette on title-page and 40 engraved folding plates by Griffart after Plumier (a few plates with minor marginal dampstaining). Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt (repaired at joints, some wear at edges). Provenance: Alumnat du St. Rosaire, Miribel-Les-Échelles, Isère (inkstamp on title-page and A4).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Plumier, a Franciscan monk born at Marseilles, made three botanical expeditions to America. On his third trip, he visited Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the coast of Brazil with the published result being Nova plantarum americanarum genera. Considered one of the most important botanical explorers of his time, Plumier commonly named newly discovered genera after famous botanists. Tournefort in turn bestowed the honor on him by giving Plumier's name to the Plumeria. In 1704, just before beginning his fourth journey, Plumier was taken ill and died of pleurisy. The 21-page Catalogus plantarum Americanarum included in this volume lists several hundred new species.
