Lot Essay

In Boy with Bowl of Eggs, Morrocco is revisiting an earlier work of the same title which he painted in 1962 (V. Keller and C. Young, Alberto Morrocco, Touring Exhibition Catalogue, Edinburgh, 1993, p. 49, pl. 66, illustrated).
He comments on this work in an interview with Clara Young in 1993, 'A skinny boy. I used to see a lot of that in Sicily at that time [when Morrocco was in Sicily in the 1950s] and the fact of making a kind of contrast of this boy with the large white bowl with eggs in it seemed to me to have some kind of relationship which was interesting' (ibid, p. 63).

Morrocco was keen to reflect the poverty of Sicily in the 1950s: 'Sicily was a very poor country then, and I wanted to make some sort of comment about that as well. You used to see children in the poor quarters of Palermo and Naples with hardly a thing to wear during the summer ...' (ibid., p. 50).
