Lot Essay

We are grateful to Jan van Helmont for noting from a photograph that the emblem in the present work appears to be a master's sign, housemark or monogram, rather than a coat-of-arms. The four snakes entwined perhaps refer to a hospital order of sisters ('SVSTER'); such snakes are the sign of Aesculapus (medical care).
