Lot Essay

A preparatory study for Campi's frescoes in S. Sigismondo, Cremona. A putto in the same pose appears in the decorative border beside the fresco depicting Saint Augustine, on the right-hand side of the transept (B. Berenson, Italian pictures of the Renaissance, London, 1967-8, III, 'Central Italian and North Italian Schools', fig. 1953).
