Lot Essay

Much of Cimatori's career was spent under the protection of the della Rovere dukes of Urbino. He is documented in Rome, Pesaro, Urbino and Rimini. The present drawing cannot be related to any of his known surviving works, but it may be connected with his work on a series of Prophets, now lost, for the Duomo in Urbino. (R. Vitali, 'Antonio Cimatori detto Visacci' in A. Massari and M. Cellini, eds., Nel Segno di Barocci: Allieve e seguaci tra Marche, Umbria, Siena, Milan, 2005, p. 105).
