Lot Essay

Ghezzi drew at least three other caricatures of Antonio Schinella Conti (1677-1749), also called l'abbé Conti. Two are dated 1722 and the third, which shows him full length in the same pose as in the present drawing, was sold at Sotheby's, London, 10 December 1979, lot 59, and is now in the Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, NC (80.23.1).
