Lot Essay

Probably a preparatory study for Gallait's picture, Portrait of Edouard Fétis (1835) in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, although in the latter Fétis is shown standing. The son of the music critic François-Joseph Fétis, Edouard became the director of the Bibliothèque Royale in Brussels.
