Roberts began a series of paintings of London from the river in 1860, a project which remained unfinished at his death in 1864. It is likely the the present work was executed in this period. The Barbican Art Gallery Exhibition Catalogue, David Roberts, 1986, lists two other watercolours of St Paul's and Blackfriars Bridge from the Thames, 1861 and Somerset House and Waterloo Bridge, 1862, nos.41 and 46 respectively, which are the same size as the present watercolour.
