Lot Essay

The sitter, James FitzJames, was the son of Arabella Churchill and James II of England, and during his father's reign he was created Duke of Berwick. FitzJames was granted French citizenship in 1703 and created Mareschal in 1706. On 25 April 1707, he led the Franco-Spanish army to victory against the English and Portuguese in the Battle of Almansa, one of the key military engagements of the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
