Lot Essay

The pose of the horse is almost identical to that in two equestrian portraits by Van Dyck: Portrait of Francisco de Moncada, Marques de Aytona, on Horseback (1634; Musée du Louvre) and the famous Portrait of Charles I on Horseback with M. de St Antoine (1633; The Royal Collection). The present drawing is close in style and medium to Van Dyck's Studies of a Horse (1633; The British Museum, London), which have been linked to the latter portrait (London, Tate Britain, Van Dyck & Britain, February-May 2009, no. 82).
