VEGA SICILIA
Without any doubt, Vega Sicilia is, and has for long been, the most renowned winery in Spain. It can be considered to be the Lafite of the Iberian peninsular, a claim not so far fetched, in that the principal grape varieties grown and used are the classic Bordeaux cépages, a precedent created long before they became imported, planted and fashionable in the 'New World' vineyards.

The winery itself dates back to 1864 and parts have been very carefully and most tastefully restored. The traditions of wine making at Vega Sicilia have scarcely altered with time. The top "Unico" wine spends an average of ten years in barriques, depending on the vintage. These small barrels are topped up once a week and racked every six months. The Valbueno wines, made from younger vines, spend three to five years in new casks.
