Lot Essay

Sir William Fergusson, first Baronet (1808-1877) was a leading surgeon. In 1849 he was appointed Surgeon-In-Ordinary to the Prince Consort, and in 1855 Surgeon-Extra-Ordinary, as well as in 1867 Sergeant-Surgeon to the Queen. (G.T.Bettany, rev.
