Lot Essay
The table, with palm-flowered altar-tripod of scrolled trusses raised on Jupiter eagle-claws, relates to a breakfast-table pattern in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808 (pl.82) and is conceived in the Grecian/Louis Quatorze fashion. Its form relates to that of a table on bacchic lion-paws, that was amongst Regency furniture acquired in the 1940s by R. Dutton, 8th Baron Sherborne (d.1985) (see M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture, London, 1965, fig. 120)
