A pair of large Meissen porcelain polychrome mythological sphinx groups
Late 19th Century, marked in underglaze blue with large crossed swords with dotted hilts and Pressmarken 1252
Naÿturalistically modelled in relief by Emmerich Adrdessen, depicting a scantily clad maiden wearing a pink floral garment, seated on a huge recumbent crowned sphinx, with her paws on a rectangular scrolled plinth, her gallant male companion modelled and decorated en suite (minor damages)

Lot Essay

Emmerich Andresen was appointed to succeed Leuteritz in 1886. He had studied sculpture in Hamburg and later in Dresden under Haehnel. The world of allegory was dear to him.
