Lot Essay

Mary Moorsom (d.1935) was the youngest sister of William Robert Moorsom (1834-1858), who sailed for India in 1853 as a Lieutenant in the 52nd Light Infantry. He was killed during the final attack on Lucknow. Mary Moorsom married Surgeon General Sir Thomas Longmore (d.1895) in 1862 and this shawl remained in her family for many years with the tale that it had been taken from the Nawab of Oudh during the Siege of Lucknow.
