Paul Fordyce Maitland (1863-1909) Maitland studied under Theodore Roussel at the Royal College of Art. The artist's spinal disability meant that he led a resricted life, but his self-imposed seclusion from society never stopped him from painting. Primarily focused on scenes of London parks and Chelsea Embankment at twilight or after dark, his works are small in scale and possess a wistful sense of melancholy and a unique vision. He was much influenced by Whistler in his exquisite use of tone. In 1889 Walter Sickert and Philip Wilson Steer organised an exhibition of 'London Impressionists in which Maitland was invited to participate. Maitland also exhibited in London at the Baillie, Paterson, Goupil and Grafton Galleries and with the R.B.A.; also in Glasgow, Paris, Munich and Dresden. He died young, in 1909.
