A Dutch rectangular mixed technique royal portrait tilepicture
18th Century
Decorated with the bust in blue and white of stadholder Willem the Taciturn with: flowing hair, a moustache, a lace collar and an Order, surrounded by a wide oval band dashed in manganese red
3x4 tiles, 40x52cm.

Lot Essay

Willem I de Zwijger (1533-1584) was the foremost rebel against the Hapsburg Spanish regime and consequently the founder of the independent Dutch United Provinces (Vader des Vaderlands)
The order is possibly of the Golden Fleece (Toison d'or)
