Lot Essay

In 1858, Alexander II, a keen huntsman, designated the district of Gatchina as his official hunting ground. As court painter, Mikhail Zichy accompanied the Emperor on his hunting trips and produced albums of watercolours dedicated to the grand Chasse Imperiale.
