Each dual-handled baluster vase with scrolled foliate cast rim centred on the front and reverse with a Bacchic mask, on a pierced foliate foot, the wood support on the underside of each inscribed MGM/XX3763

Lot Essay

Interestingly, the present pair of vases was acquired by MGM Studios in California to decorate the set of the 1938 film Marie Antoinette. The pair reappeared in the Cary Grant film Crisis in 1950 prior to their acquisition at public auction by the current owner in 1970.
