Lot Essay

Two vases of this form were displayed in A.B. Daniell & Son's booth at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, of which this is possibly one (see the steroptic image reproduced above). Christopher Dresser originally designed this 'Chinese bottle' form for the London International Exhibition of 1862. See Joan Jones, Minton, The First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, p. 89 for two drawings of the form attributed to Dresser. Also compare the example sold from a Private collection, Sotheby's, New York, 11 March 1997, lot 293.
