Following the attack by Osman Digna and his Mahdist forces on the 4th February 1884 at El Teb on the Egyptian Force under the command of General Valentine Baker which had been despatched to relieve the beleagured garrisons at the towns of Tokar and Sinkat, a second British Force was dispatched under the command of Sir Gerald Graham. Graham and his 4500 men arrived at El Teb on the 29th September defeating Dinga's army in a decisive victory.
