Details
A BRASS SCAPHE DIAL
POSSIBLY GERMAN 17TH CENTURY
unsigned and undated; the interior bowl gilt, hour lines marked and labelled twice with punched numerals 6-12-6, the symbols of the zodiac also punched; the inside of the lid with a compass with later needle rotates with pointer for scale 90-0-90, an outer scale 1-12 twice, surrouned with 32 points marked with triangles, one with a heart, a raised bridge by 4 and 5, the outside engraved with floral motifs.
2in. (5cm.) diam.
The style of the punched numerals suggest a Germanic origin. The floral motif possibly later, especially to the dome where the engraving is less well executed. The axis joining the two hinged sections overlaps, possibly suggesting a second dome would originally have joined this instrument.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 15% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
