Lot Essay

The present chimneypiece exemplifies the Neo-classical style as practiced by Robert Adam and his contemporaries. The delicate carving of the decorative motifs on the frieze is complemented by the well figured inset Siena marble columns and the unusual pleated ribbon motif framing the aperture.
