Lot Essay

This beautiful and vigorously figured Roman marble top with its 18th Century ormolu border is typical of the Grand Tour fashion for reproducing and embellishing Antique objects and works of art. The marble itself could have been re-used from an ancient monument and would have adorned the top of a commode or table. The faceted legs were added by the Jansen bronze-workers and used as a glamourous low table in one of their most celebrated projets.
