Lot Essay

Pietro Fragiacomo is best known for his depictions of the Venetian lagoon and favours scenes of everyday life along the water. Fragiacomo was especially concerned with rendering the effect of light and water and painting won him the admiration of James Abbott McNeill
Whistler. He gained entry to the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, of which Whistler was President. In 1898, his pictures were exhibited in London at the first exhibition of the Society, alongside pictures by Auguste Rodin, Edouard Manet, and Edgar Degas.
