Lot Essay

H.M.S. Resolution, the first Royal Navy vessel to bear this name, was also one of the first 70-gun two-deckers in the fleet. Built at Harwich in 1667 and extensively rebuilt at Chatham in 1698, she was one of numerous ships which foundered off the Channel coast in "the Great Storm" during the night of 26th-27th November, 1703. Fortunately blown ashore, all 221 men aboard her survived.
