DONNE, John (1572-1631). Poems ... with Elegies on the Authors Death. London: M[iles] F[lesher] for John Marriot, 1633. 4° (187 x 136mm). Nn1 a cancel. (Light worming at inner gutter, bb4r and Oo2v slightly soiled, Ee4v with minor marginal stains, Xx4 with piece torn from margin, some corners creased, without front blank.) [Bound with:]
DONNE, J. Juvenilia or Certaine Paradoxes and Problemes. London: E[lizabeth] P[urslowe] for Henry Seyle, 1633. 4° (187 x 136mm). (Worming in gutter, F2-3 slightly soiled at margin.) Contemporary calf, red speckled edges (rebacked, edges restored). Provenance: by descent to Richard Rhys, 9th Baron Dynevor (1935-2008).
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF THE POEMS ('the most trustworthy of the original editions' -- Grierson); the first edition in print of all but one poem ('Elegie on Prince Henry'); and virtually the first appearance in print of any of Donne's work, preceded only by the Anniversaries (1611, 1612) and a few occasional pieces. The sheets of the first edition were frequently corrected in the press but, as they were gathered indiscriminately to form copies, there is little basis for establishing priority. However, Nn1 is a cancel, lacking the running title on recto. FIRST EDITION of the Juvenilia, 'clever and entertaining trifles ... probably written before 1600 during the more wanton period of their author's life' (Keynes). With licenses to print on versos of F1 and H4. Grolier Wither to Prior 286 & 284; Keynes Donne 78 & 43; Pforzheimer 296; STC 7045 & 7043.
