Empress Catherine II of Russia (1729-1796), in blue satin grand habit with white lace adorning the neck and sleeve, ermine coronation mantle, secured with diamond and pearl-set brooch, diamond earring, strands of pearls, a feathered diamond comb and jewelled coronet in her curling powdered hair, wearing the blue moiré sash and breast-star of the Imperial Russian Order of St Andrew

The present miniature derives from a large-scale portrait on canvas by the Russian artist Fedor Rokotov (1735-1808), painted in 1763 and now in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
