A RARE BRASS-HILTED LEFT-HAND DAGGER, SPANISH OR ITALIAN
CIRCA 1650
With tapering blade of flattened diamond section, rectangular ricasso, the outer face with a brass-lined stamp, a rampant lion, brass hilt cast in relief, comprising long quillons branched on both sides towards the middle, the inner branch shaped for the thumb, the outer branches drawn up to support a triangular guard, the latter decorated with a complex pierced design of interlaced scrollwork involving winged half-figures, cherub masks, monsters and three human mask medallions, the latter en suite with a series of medallions at the quillon tips and around the pommel, and with later grip of patterned wire and large 'Turk's heads'
