A FINE MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID LACQUER RECTANGULAR TRAY
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)

The shallow rectangular tray raised on short tab feet with a rounded everted rim, finely decorated to the centre with mother-of-pearl and highlighted with gold leaf inlay to depict the seven sages of the bamboo grove on a river bank, variously animated as if in conversation and engaged in leisurely pursuits with attendants bearing books, wine and a qin, all beneath pine and wutong trees, within a border of flowering and fruiting stems around the rim, the reverse with the inlaid three-character hallmark, Sitong Tang

Lot Essay

Imagery of the 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove' was a popular decorative theme on scholar's objects of the late Ming to early Qing period. The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, or the Seven Worthies, was a group of distinguished scholar-officials of the late 3rd century who lived in the seclusion of a bamboo grove for the enjoyment of music, wine, poetry and literary composition. Their literary pursuits away from the world of official responsibilities became a prevalent theme from the late Ming period onward.
