"GOOD NIGHT GOD BLESS YOU DADDY"
A poignant, very early letter from Hemingway to his father. "I feel a lot better when all my work is done and my conscience [sic] is clear," the 13 year-old future author writes. "I looked up in my baseball schedule and found that the New York Giants play [the] Chicago Cubs for the championship on Sat. May 11 next Sat. an I will have choir practice in the morning and the afternoon will be free. The game starts at 3 o'clock. Let's see if we can't go. It will be a dandy game the last of the series. Yours, lovingly, Ernie." Underneath his signature Hemingway draws six circles each with a dot in the center and then a large bull's-eye, adding, "Toosies. Good night. God bless you daddy." By "playing for the championship" Hemingway meant vying for first place in the National League. The Cubs and the Giants were close in that early stage of the campaign, but New York beat Chicago 10-3 on 11 May, and went on to win the National League pennant. Hemingway's father would die by his own hand in 1928. Provenance: Maurice F. Neville, sold Sotheby's New York, 13 April 2004, lot 85.
