24o (3 1/8 x 3 in.), 28 of 32 leaves. Collation: A-D8. Decorative line of printer's flowers along top and bottom of titlepage, text in roman and italic letter (Lacks leaves A2-3; B7 and D8 (blank?), title frayed and torn catching several letters in imprint, strip torn from top of C3 affecting several lines, a few catchwords shaved, corners dog-eared.) Contemporary calf-backed thin wooden boards (very worn, back board split and partly detached).
THIRD RECORDED COPY OF A 1776 "NEW PRIMER": PRINTED IN CONNECTICUT, "BOUND AND SOLD" IN RHODE ISLAND. According to Isaiah Thomas, the printer John Trumbull served an apprenticeship in the establishment of the Boston printer Kneeland. In October 1773 Trumbull and his partners Alexander and James Robertson launched a weekly newspaper entitled, The Norwich Packets, and the Connecticut, Massachusetts, New-Hampshire and Rhode Island Weekly Advertiser. When the Revolution came, the Robertsons, who remained loyal to Britain, withdrew, leaving Trumbull from June 1776 as sole proprietor of the firm. He continued to publish until his death in 1802.
