WASHINGTON, George (1732-1799), President. Autograph manuscript signed ("G. Washington"), n.d. A transcription ENTIRELY IN WASHINGTON'S HAND of a deed by Thomas Owsley dated 25 May 1742. 1 page, folio, fine condition.

A FINE EXAMPLE OF A WASHINGTON LEGAL DOCUMENT, in which he creates a true copy of a 1742 deed of land from Thomas Owsley to Hugh West. The land in question, some 50 acres, is located "upon Doeg Run" in Prince William County, Maryland. Owsley's deed transfers a free and clear title to the land "to him the said Hugh West his heirs & assigns, forever by and under the yearly rent reserved for the same by our Sovereign Lord the King..." Washington transcribes the names of three witnesses (William Hackney, Henry Baggess and Meredith Davis) as well as the county clerk, Catesby Cocke. At the bottom he writes "True Copy G. Washington." Hugh West was a member of the House of Burgesses. Owsley (ca. 1698-1750) was a major landowner and surveyor in Stafford County and later Prince William County, Virginia.
