Lot Essay

This is a posthumous portrait of Friedrich, wearing the regimentals of the Prussian lifeguard cuirassier regiment, bearing the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle, and the Pour le Merite and Iron Cross badges at the neck. He reigned for merely 90 days, the son of Wilhelm I, first Kaiser of a unified Germany, and the father of Wilhelm II whose policies contributed to the outbreak of the first World War. He married Victoria, Princess Royal of Great Britain, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
