Lot Essay

Pierre Nogaret maître in 1745 in Lyon.

This bergere demonstrates the elegant and individual style of the Lyon menuisier Pierre Nogaret. Characteristics of his oeuvre include the predominant use of polished walnut and the sinuous contours of the seat-rails and back. Other technical details are exclusive to him, such as reducing the dimensions of the seat-rail crossbars and the placing of a supporting brace between the seat-rails. It is unusual that he stamped his chairs on a visible site, generally on the back-rail, which can also be seen on the present chair (B. Pallot, The Art of the Chair in 18th Century France, Paris, 1989, p. 314).
